Construction site of Xiqu Centre
The West Kowloon Cultural District Authority is a responsible organisation in the sense that its contractors are required to have a high standard of performance in ensuring safety during construction.
At the moment, many projects in the West Kowloon Cultural District like the Xiqu Centre and M+ are in the construction stage. Even though we always try to complete projects quickly, getting things done as fast as possible is not our ultimate goal. So what is our most important consideration? Safety first!
As we place value on construction safety, we have adopted a number of measures to ensure that every construction site in the district is safe.
First, our staff conduct site safety inspections every week. In addition, staff from our consulting firm conduct site safety inspections every day. After each inspection, we meet to discuss potential hazards. Luckily, most of our contractors are cooperative and willing to make on-going improvements.

Second, we have a well-developed annual Safety Performance Recognition Scheme to give credit to contractors who demonstrate outstanding performance in safety year round. I believe that this scheme provides a very strong motivation for contractors to work hard on all aspects of safety.

Last but not least, we never ignore small details that will affect the safety performance of our contractors. For example, all members of staff are required to wear a safety helmet, a reflective vest and a pair of safety shoes each time they enter the construction site – a requirement that is more stringent than that set up by the Labour Department.
The joint effort of the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority, the consulting firms and the contractors keeps the construction sites in the West Kowloon Cultural District safe. I appreciate every team that has put effort into maintaining good safety performance because we all know that behind every worker is a family who depends on him or her.
