Summer Intern - Project Control

“Making safety a habit” is the slogan that aims to raise the safety awareness of all the colleagues who work in the construction site. We not only bear this slogan on our shirt, but also in our mind.

I am fortunate that I can join the WKCDA as a summer intern, which gives me the rare opportunity to gain some actual construction site experiences that I never had. The site experiences is just like an adventure. It always tries to surprise me and broaden my horizon, while it will also try to defeat me and put me in peril doubtlessly if I do not pay attention to my own safety. The experience tells me how vital safety in construction site is.

To ensure a safe and satisfactory working environment, different policies and regulations are implemented to encourage the workers to keep themselves from jeopardy, while maintaining the construction site as clean and tidy as possible. Wearing the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is a must before entering the construction site. PPE includes the safety helmet, high visibility clothing and safety shoes.

Regular safety inspection is also conducted. Our safety inspector will coordinate with the contractor to check if the construction workers obey the code of practices for safety proposed by the Occupation Safety & Health Council. For instance, to prevent the workers falling from height, we have to ensure the workers have worn proper additional safety equipment including the safety belt and anchor.

If there is anyone do not follow the safety practice, we will stop him from his work until he is prepared and dressed up properly and accordingly. If someone violates the practice repeatedly, he has to leave immediately and will not be allowed to work in the site anymore. We have such strict practice is simply because we treat humans’ live are always the most treasurable matter and we can never neglect the safety issue even the tight schedule that we are facing. That’s why we always strive for zero accidents in the construction site, we do hope that every workers can achieve a healthy and safe working habit.

“Making safety a habit” acts more than a slogan.
